Description: This vintage real photo postcard features Princess Marie Auguste of Anhalt (1898-1983). She is fashionable and quite pretty. Her father was Prince Eduard of Anhalt and her mother was Princess Louise Charlotte of Saxe-Altenburg. Her father succeeded his brother to the throne in 1918 and died the same year. Marie-Auguste married Prince Joachim of Prussia, son of the German Emperor, Wilhelm II. The couple has one son but divorced shortly after the end of World War I. There was one report, perhaps a rumor, that the princess had abandoned her husband and child to run away with another man. It was also asserted that the Kaiser had her forcibly returned home. When the war ended, she filed for divorce. Was it because her husband's family had lost status? It is strongly believed that marital discord is what led Prince Joachim to commit suicide by gunshot just weeks after the divorce was finalized. He was just 29 years old when he died. After her husband's death, the princess became embroiled in a custody battle over her son. Her ex husbands brother wanted to take custody of the child. He won custody but lost it on appeal. In 1926, she married again. Her second husband was a childhood friend. They divorced in 1935. She joined the Nazi party in 1934. This real photo postcard was published by Gustave Liersch & Co. as part of a series (No.7653). The firm was located in Berlin, Germany. The photo portrait of the Princess was taken by Julius Muller. He operated a studio in Dessau, Germany. The postcard was written in 1916. This postcard is in very good condition (see scans).
