Printing with the Hand Press

Description: Herewith a Definitive Manual by Lewis M. Allen to Encourage Fine Printing through Hand-craftmanship “One of the supreme pleasures available to man is intelligence discipline knowledge guiding the hand to create beautiful as well as intellectually desirable objects and this pleasure is uniquely inherent in the handpress.” This book was first issued in a limited edition of 140 copies, which were printed on a Columbian handpress at The Allen Press. The present edition was offset from proofs of the limited edition. The type face is Romancée, designed by J. Van Krimpen for Joh. Enschedé en Zonen. The illustrations are by Victor A. Seward. Mallette Dean engraved on wood the pressmark which appears on the final page, and he also engraved the decoration of the hand, which is based on a fifteenth-century woodcut. Condition: Red textured cloth with gold gilt blind stamp decoration on front and rear boards and text to spine. Spines, boards, and corners are in near fine condition with no cosmetic blemishes and all corners sharp. The binding is straight and tight, hinges are firmly attached with no cracking to the end papers. Text block is firm, comprised of heavy cream paper and with all pages firmly attached. The interior pages are clean with no tears, no chips, and no previous owner marks. Beautifully Illustrated with black and white illustrations and woodcut decorations. 75 pages plus index.
