Description: Queen Elizabeth II 1935 REX WHISTLER Illustration End Paper Princess Book Page Historic Royal Memorabilia from Saturday's Toys presents... a beautifully designed end paper by Rex Whistler (aka Reginald John Whistler) for Princess Elizabeth of York (later to be crowned as Queen Elizabeth II); circa 1935. The elegant design was created by British artist, designer and illustrator, Rex Whistler (1905 - 1944). While the scope of Whistler's work was extensive, his service in the armed forces during WWII led to his early death (caused by a mortar bomb) at only 39 years of age. He was buried in the Normandy region of north western France. As originally included within The Princess Elizabeth Gift Book (to raise funds for The Princess Elizabeth of York Hospital for Children). Published in 1935; end paper has been neatly removed from book and is preserved as offered. Suitable for framing or for use in creative arts projects. 7" x 9.75"; good condition with minor wear from use and long-term storage; as originally published to benefit the Princess Elizabeth Hospital for Children. While the cornerstone of Princess Elizabeth's Hospital for Children was dedicated by the Queen Mother in 1934, the building would be nearly destroyed by fire in 1936. Though work immediately commenced in reconstruction of the hospital, the added disruption caused by World War II meant that the hospital would not open as originally intended until it was dedicated by Princess Elizabeth herself in July of 1948. It would later serve as a military hospital and later provided care for mentally handicapped patients, eventually closing in 1998 and falling into ruin. The land acquired for the hospital has since been sold to a developer and the site is known today as Banstead Wood Estate, a luxury housing community of apartment homes. Several of the original buildings were preserved and now serve the residents there. In light of the spectacular countryside at the development (now including a popular hiking trail), it's easy to understand why this land was chosen as the site where Princess Elizabeth was honored in the naming of a hospital that shared these grounds for a half century. A beautiful tribute to a Queen whose reign outlasted even the buildings once dedicated in her name. About Us Combined Shipping Available Saturday’s Toys and Collectibles was founded in 1994 by Southern California author and media historian, Dave Mason. Soon after eBay's launch the following year, Saturday's Toys was among the first online specialists to strategize in embracing this rapidly developing technology. Having delivered over 15,000 coveted treasures since that time, Saturday's Toys is pleased to partner with researchers and collectors throughout the globe. Today, online offerings of archival keepsakes are presented in celebration of the times that allow for family, friends and neighbors to join in memorable gatherings that nurture the strong connections that bind a community together. These treasures are affectionately represented by "Saturday's Toys." In that light we present our adopted motto (with a nod to the Sherman Brothers): "Oh, let's go fly a kite!" We are glad to combine shipping for multiple purchases in order to reduce costs whenever possible. Simply let us know before processing payment for the items selected and we'll be glad to revise and forward a final invoice to reflect the combined shipping price.
