None was available, although much had been written by many authors. This writer had to prepare such a reference for himself and hope that others would find it useful. Where did the Tracks Go (hereafter referred to as Tracks) was published by The Chauncy Press in 1985. Tracks went back to the printer several times but is now out of print. The present volume differs from it in three significant ways: First, much additional detail on those lines and stations included in Tracks is presented in this book on the scale-four maps of mines, mining processing facilities, sawmills, and pulp mills. Examples are at Lyon Mountain, Standish, Port Henry, Mineville, Witherbee, Fisher Hill, Benson Mines, Hammondville-Ironville, Crown Point, Tahawus, North Creek, Conifer, Cranberry Lake, Saint Regis Falls, Santa Clara, Corinth-Palmer, Ticonderoga, Wanak-ena, and Newton Falls. Many additional logging spurs are shown for the Rich Lumber Company, Oval Wood Dish Company, and Brooklyn Cooperage Company. Second, the geographic boundaries of Tracks have been expanded in this book. The eastern boundary is the Delaware & Hudson Mainline along Lake Champlain. The northern boundary is the Rutland Railroad, although this book provides detail on this line only where it crossed Adirondack regional lines at Rouses Point, Malone Junction, and Moira. The Saint Lawrence Division of the New York Central and the Rome, Watertown & Ogdensburg form the west boundary, but no detail is provided on these lines. The New York Central Mainline along the Mohawk River, not included, forms the south boundary. Additional chapters on railroad lines not included in Tracks are Chapter 11 on the Delaware & Hudson Mainline, Chapter 13 on the Baldwin Branch, Chapter 17 on the Elizabethtown Terminal Railroad and the New York & Pennsylvania Company Railroad at Willsboro, Chapter 21 on the Moo-ers Branch, Chapter 29 on the Hannawa Railroad, Chapter 25 on the Watson Page Lumber Company Railroad, Chapter 30 on the Clifton Iron Company Railroad, and Chapter 33 on Three Peripheral Railroads from the Saint Lawrence and Black River Valleys. Chapter 13 on the Lake George Region, Chapter 34 on the Fonda Johnstown & Gloversville Railroad, and Chapter 35 on the Jerseyfield Railroad provide only brief sketches of these lines with abundant references for further reading. Chapters 22 and 43 are on the recent history of passenger service on Amtrak's Adirondack and the Adirondack Railway of 1979-1980, respectively. The map of the Carthage & Adirondack Railroad (Chapter 31 here) terminated westward at Briggs in the 1985 edition. In this book the maps cover the line all the way to Carthage. Third, Tracks treated the railroads only geographically. This book also provides ten introductory chapters arranged by industrial topics for those researchers who study history by topicsa land-use history overview. Chapters 3, 5, and 6 deal mainly with commodities exported from the Adirondacks, while Chapters 2 and 7 deal mainly with commodities (including tourists!) imported.
