Description: Here is a very nice and seldom seen old political campaign token or medal made of a white metal composition, in quite decent collectible condition overall, measuring app. 1 & 1/4" across, with a plain edge. This interesting election piece shows a fair amount of wear, with light marks on the surfaces, and it has been rather neatly holed at the top and bottom. That being said, it is nothing horrific, as the pictures hopefully indicate, and I have not done anything to clean or alter its appearance. Three of the photos have been "enhanced" for clarity, and the medal is identified in the DeWitt reference as JB 1856-8. The reference mentions "this piece was unknown to Bushnell or Satterlee.", and indicates it was first noted in the early 1860's, with DeWitt being a little uncertain regarding its history. The obverse features a "nude bust" of the gentleman facing left, and around the portrait is "James Buchanan". The top of the reverse reads "Born Nov. 13. 1791", with three small stars beneath, and below is "Entd. Congress 1821 - Minir. To Russia 1832 - U. S. Senator 1834 - Secy Of State 1845 - Minir. To G. B. - 1853". "President 1857" is along the bottom, with a small star above. Uncommon Americana! $220.
