Description: Constitution of the State of Virginia, and the Ordinances Adopted By the Convention Which Assembled at Alexandria, the 13th Day of February, 1864. By Virginia Published: D. Turner, Printer to the State, Alexandria, VA, 1864. FIRST EDITION. 31 pp. Disbound pamphlet. Title page is present, but detached. Not Ex-Lib. Very scarce. Proposed Unionist constitution outlawing slavery, anticipating the downfall of the Confederacy, promulgated by loyalist Virginians living in exile in the northern part of the state. From February 13 through April 11, 1864 seventeen delegates, some of whom were owners of slaves, wrote a new constitution for Virginia. When they voted on March 10th to declare that "Slavery and involuntary servitude (except for crime) is hereby abolished and prohibited in the state forever," church bells rang throughout the city of Alexandria. The new constitution also repudiated the Confederate government, barring any of its officials from holding public office in the future I've done my best to describe the book, but if you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail.
