Description: "In the North Woods of Maine," by E.E. Thomas, published by World Book Company, Yonkers-on-Hudson, 1923, 109 pages, hardcover in linen-backed boards with color illustration, 8" by 5.5". Ultra-rare account of life in the remote northern woods of Maine. Illustrated with full-page and partial-page illustrations by H. Boylston Dummer. With eight pages of ads for other pioneer and adventure books in the rear. Book does show some wear but is exceedingly scarce. Interior clean and free of foxing but with one-inch tear to a page in front and an inkstain to fore-edge of first 35 pages and to front endpapers. Some creasing to top edges of a few pages toward the rear. Boy's name penned to a book ad page in the rear, with a few scribbles to a blank page. Binding solid. Cover with general soiling and age darkening, and with ink blotches both front and back. Some fraying to tips and spine ends. The author writes in the preface: "Nearly a half century ago my cousin Frank and I lived alone, from September to April, in a wilderness cabin built with our own hands. In after years, when I told my two sons of these experiences, they asked me to write down the story of that winter, so that in the future they might recall to memory the tales of my life in the woods. Thus it was for my own boys that I first wrote this little story. But after I had written it, they persuaded me to go a step further and make a book, that all who love the woods and the wild life in them might have an opportunity to enjoy these experiences too. And so I offer it to the boys and girls of today, knowing that they will understand the great love for the open that has led me to write the book. E.E.T., Saranac Lake, New York."
