Description: It is hard to escape the legacy of the Punch Magazine. From 1841 to 2002, the magazine cast a satirical eye on life in Britain. It charted the interests, concerns and frustrations of the country and today it stands as an invaluable resource not just as cartoon art and satire, but as primary source material for social historians.Illustration by L. Raven-hill (excellent). Single page sized 8 x 10 1/2 inches, shown slightly cropped, pulled from the magazine PUNCH, April 18, 1928, not a modern reproduction. Condition: bright and clean, verso with unrelated print with some show-through. A fine copy. May be framed.THE CHINA SPRING OFFENSIVE. "In the spring a dragon's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of war." After "Locksley Hall." --This cartoon showing two Chinese dragons blowing fire at each other from their respective Southern Winter Quarters and Northern Winter Quarters as an imperial palace crumbles in the background. --The Chinese Civil War was a civil war in China fought between the Kuomintang (KMT)-led government of the Republic of China and the Communist Party of China (CPC) lasting intermittently between 1927 and 1949. Although particular attention is paid to the four years of fighting from 1945 to 1949, the war actually started in August 1927, after the KMT-CCP Alliance collapsed during the Northern Expedition.[9] The conflict took place in two stages, the first between 1927 and 1937, and the second from 1946 to 1950; the Second Sino-Japanese War from 1937 to 1945 was an interlude in which the two sides were united against the forces of Japan. The Civil War resulted in a major revolution in China, with the Communists gaining control of mainland China and establishing the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1949, forcing the Republic of China (ROC) to retreat to Taiwan. A lasting political and military standoff between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait ensued, with the ROC in Taiwan and the PRC in mainland China both officially claiming to be the legitimate government of all China. Punch, a magazine of humor and satire, ran from 1841-2002. A very British institution renowned internationally for its wit and irreverence, it helped to coin the term "cartoon" in its modern sense as a humorous illustration.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Questions welcome.
