Description: Rare ANTI SLAVERY Abolition Movement Free Slaves Pre-Civil War 1843 Newspaper Offered is an original, collectible newspaper (NOT a copy/reproduction): NATIONAL ANTI-SLAVERY STANDARD, New York, Feb. 2, 1843 * Rare abolitionism publication As the title would suggest, an anti-slavery newspaper from 18 years before the Civil War. Although there is anti-slavery content here, perhaps the best article is on page 2: "The Recent Capture of Montrerey" with the report beginning: "The capture of Monterey by our squadron under Commodore Jones is an occurrence that out not to be permitted to pass without marked attention...Monterey is the capital of California, one of the departments of Mexico on the Pacific ocean..." followed by further detail. This was a curious incident, as all of California was part of Mexico at the time. False news that the U.S. and Mexico were at war prompted Commodore Jones to sail into Monterey harbor and demand the surrender of the Mexican garrison before the British would intercede. The Mexican post was given up without incident, but the next day given back to the Mexicans once the report of war had been discredited. As the American squadron left Monterey they saluted the Mexican flag. Four pages, minor slit near the center causing no loss of readability, generally good condition.
