Description: Rare Antique Book - "Through the Dark Continent" by Henry M. Stanley Volumes 1 and 2. They have 1 fold out map. Contains the Sources of the Nile around the Great Lakes of Equatorial Africa and Down the Livingstone River to the Atlantic Ocean. 150 Wonderful illustrations from woodcuts, each carefully covered with vellum Published in New York by Harper & Brothers Publishers in Franklin Square - 1879. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE. These show wear from age and use, surface wear, rubbing, loose pages, stains, yellowing from age, rear map pockets are torn, and some minor tears on the pages. However, these are still in very readable and a collectors treasured set! Sir Hery Morton Stanley, GCB, born John Rowlands (January 28, 1841 - May 10, 1904), was a Welsh journalist and explorer famous fro his exploration of Africa and his search for David Livingstone. Stanley is often remembered for the words uttered to Livingstone upon finding him, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?", although there is some questions as to authenticity of this now famous greeting. His legacy of death and destruction i the Congo Region is Considered an inspiration for Joseph Conrad's heart of Darkness, detailing atrocities inflicted upon the natives.
