Description: Rare Antique Mauchline Albert Tartan Ware Postage Stamp Box, c1880. Here on offer is a gorgeous antique Mauchline Tartan Ware Postage Receipt Stamp Box c1880. The production of box ware or Mauchline ware took place from the 1820s until 1933 by W&A Smith. These boxes have always been extremely collectable and range from basic transfers to views of the place of purchase, from vases to boxes. The views ranged across the whole country and included tartan ware and later fern ware was introduced. The items are almost exclusively made using sycamore wood. The products were so successful that they were sent all around the world. The factory was destroyed by a fire in 1933, production was never restarted. The patent for this style of Mauchline ware was registered in 1871 and was initially designed to celebrate the marriage of Victoria’s daughter Princess Louise to the Marquis of Lorne in 1870. This wonderful little Tartan ware box is circular in form has a turned wooden body covered with one of the more unusual Tartans, with the original gold on black label ‘ALBERT’. The lid features, what I believe to be a Queen Victoria Penny Lilac, the stamp is faded and is worn, the rest of the lid is in good order. The lid pulls off. The stamp case is offered in good antique condition, it measures approx. 5.3cm in diameter by 1.4cm A wonderful collectable for a discerning collector.
