Description: An antique Scottish pewter lidded gill measure; I think that it is quite rare. There are numerous marks around the rim including one for a standards issued (229) in 1826 to E Simpson, Clerk of Peace for Kirkcudbright County. The space is small where the mark is placed but there is rampant lion in a shield with a letter K above, then a ‘I’ to the right and another letter to the right; the letter to the left is illegible. There is also a VR below crown and the number ‘229’. Towards the handle there is the letter ‘G’ a crown, the rampant lion in a shield and the letters ‘SK’ below. I have added photos of all these marks, so please look at them all as they do form part of the description, maybe better than my words! There may be a maker's mark amongst them in photo 7, but I can't tell. It has incised lines on the lid and on the body and it weighs 219g. From the base to and including the thumb piece, it measures 10cm. The base is not a prefect circle, but at the widest is just under 5cm in diameter. The rim/ lid is 5cm in diameter. Condition: it sits flat, it doesn’t rock; it’s antique and has wear in keeping with age and use; dings and dents; scratches and bumps; a long time ago the thumb piece has snapped off.
