Description: 1954 CLEVELAND BROWNS “THE DUKE” GAME-USED FOOTBALL BY WILSON FOR THORP SPORTING GOODS . SIGNED BY 1954 NFL CHAMPIONSHIP QB OTTO GRAHAM, END PETE BREWSTER, & DB KENNY Konz. PERSONALIZED “TO MIKE” BY ALL THREE SIGNERS. The provenance on this football is 100% guaranteed, as my family has been its only owner. Darrel “Pete” Brewster is my “Uncle Pete”. Mike was Michael D. Hummel, my older brother (b. 1952 d. 1956), who tragically died in a drowning accident in Fort Lauderdale FL at age 4 in 1956. Uncle Pete passed in 2020, but was married to my late Aunt Vivian (Hummel) Brewster, my Dad’s sister. He and my Dad, who was two years older, played HS basketball together at Portland HS (Indiana). They were best friends as kids and brothers-in-law for their entire lives. “Uncle Pete” Brewster, who scored a TD in the Browns 1954 NFL Championship 56-10 demolition of the Detroit Lions, had this 1954 game-used ball signed by Otto Graham and Kenny Konz for Mike, my Dad’s first-born son, and gave it to my Dad. It was my father’s prized possession until he passed in 2012, at which time the ball passed to me. As background, Uncle Pete was drafted in 1952 after playing both football and basketball for Purdue, and played for the Browns with Otto Graham from 1952-1958 and for the Steelers 1959-60. He won two NFL Championships with the Browns and was All-Pro twice in 1955-56, and second team All-Pro in 1957. After retiring as a player, Uncle Pete served as the receivers coach for rhe Minnesota Vikings and Kansas City Chiefs. He was the Chiefs receivers throughout Hank Stram’s regime as head coach, including both Super Bowls I and IV. As further provenance of the authority of this football, attached to this listing please see the last photo #8 of my Uncle Pete’s KC Chiefs Super Bowl IV championship ring. He used to wear it to our summertime family reunions on the Hummel farm in Portland, and I snapped this photo of it on his hand at the last reunion he attended before he passed in January 2020. To be clear, THE SUPER BOWL IV RING IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING AND IS NOT FOR SALE. AUTOGRAPHS: The football is signed in white chalk/wax, and all signatures are sharp and clearly legible. CONDITION: Although the nipple valve has gone bad and the ball is only partially inflated, it retains its fully inflated shape due to the rigidity of the pigskin leather. PRICE: It’s difficult to set a price for this football, as it was definitely used in the Browns 1954 Championship season, and may have been the ball with which my Pete Brewster caught a TD pass in the championship game. And, of course, Otto Graham was one of first QBs elected into the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, while Pete Brewster was posthumously honored by the Browns in 2022 in its Legends Ring of Honor. I know personalized balls are typically less valuable, but I can find no other 1954 game-used Cleveland Browns footballs for sale anywhere, let alone signed by Otto Graham. So, I’ll try $2495.00 Buy It Now. SHIPPING: The football will be shipped via USPS priority mail, fully insured, and with signature required, within 24 hours of purchase and payment Please feel free to reach out with any questions.
