RARE Griswold Cast Iron # 468 Self Basting Skillet Cover NO PATENT & # 8 Skillet

Description: Very Rare "PATENT APPL'D FOR" Griswold #8 Self Basting Skillet Cover (lid) #468 which looks brand new on the inside of the lid. The Skillet Cover was produced in 1920 or earlier. The Skillet Cover has a large block logo. Also included is the #8 Griswold Skillet with large block logo #704V. Both are ready for use. NO cracks or repairs to the Skillet or the Skillet Cover. Both sit flat on my stone countertop and are ready for use. I received this info from gt-69-convt, a Griswold cast iron expert and wanted to share the info below because someone asked if the handle had been repaired. Most Griswold skillet covers were made after 1920 (ie, patent date), and used different handles than on your cover. The handle on your cover is common on Dutch ovens covers, which Griswold had made since since the 1880s. It (skillet cover) is not repaired. Cast iron does not repair well. When cast iron is repaired, it is typically by welding, and that leaves weld marks/scars. Also the weld metal will be steel or nickel, and that also is visible after being ground down. And grinding leaves a different finish than as-cast. When this item was produced, they used the handle available at the time (Dutch Oven handle). The later handles had not been developed yet. This piece is exactly correct for what it is. That includes being a little different than later covers. Later covers represent about99.99%of covers. But most do not recognize or understand the details/nuances, and how they are affected by the casting date (before 1920 vs after).
