Rare 17th Century Spanish Military Officer’s Cup Hilt Rapier Sword with Inscription and Dated 1654 Click images to enlarge Description For Consideration is a Rare 17th Century Spanish Officer’s Cup Hilt Rapier Sword with Inscription and Dated 1654 c1654 For your consideration is this rare and Beautiful Spanish Officer’s Cup Hilt Rapier Sword dated 1654. The cup-hilt rapier is a fascinating weapon, particularly popular in the 17th century. It was widely used by military officers and civilians alike, especially in Spain and Italy. The defining feature of this rapier is its cup-shaped guard, which provided excellent hand protection during combat. The rapier itself is designed for both cutting and thrusting, making it a versatile weapon. It features a double-edged blade with an acute point and an elaborate guard to protect the hand. Description: Rare Spanish Cup Hilt Rapier dated 1654. Plain design used for military use. Long straight quillons measuring 12.0 inches long with matching rear curved guard. Excellent solid tang featured copper mesh wire bound wood grip, top and bottom with brass caps. The blade double edged with small central fuller engraved with (XX) Toledo markings and what we believe is Spanish/Latin to English translation for “If you are prudent and brave 1654” to one side the reverse “Strait from the Mountains 1654” and various other marks. This sword is well balanced in the hand and has an overall length of 48.0 inches with a blade length of 40.5 inches. Condition is fantastic for it’s being 475 years old. Nice even untouched dark gray patina with very light pitting. No apparent damage or repairs. Blade and hilt are very tight with no movement at all. A fine example. Came out of an important sword collection in Scotland and then on display in a Private Military Museum in Worcester, Massachusetts. A Beautiful Museum worthy example which would make an exceptional addition to any Sword or Military Collection.
