Description: Broad Period: Circa. 6500BC - 5000BC. Field Context: Late Mesolithic into Neolithic recovered from a newly discovered suspected seasonal / permanent settlement site. Physical Details: Size: length. 110 mm [4.3"]. width. Uniform 54 mm [2.13"]. thickness. 20 mm- 30 mm. Weight: 313 grams [11oz]. Description: This is an unusual and rare find as a suspected flint hammer head ina tan to brown flint. The flint has been worked into a regular rectangular form with a uniform width from the hammer striking face to the curved and thinned out hafting rear. From my detailed pictures one can appreciate the areas of reduction and assoc scarring to the flint surfaces. I suspect that this example would have been hafted upon a wooden pole with the oviod rear of the hammer fitted into a corresponding hole to the timber handle. Condition: very fine complete. The flint has an excellent patina with dark to light iron and salt oxides to all surface. The stone has an archaic polished finish particularly to the hafting zone. Provenance: Northern Cambridgeshire - salt marsh margins. Recovered field walking autumn 2024 in on the northern Cambridgeshire Fenedge. The stone was found in a new search location identified tracking an ancient dry riverbed seen from drone aireal reconnaissance. NB* please note... due to significant postal service increased costs my domestic and international costs have increased incrementally, I DO NOT make profit within these costs - thank you .
