TIBET. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ Khmer Art: Title: Khmer Terracotta Head of the Male Deity, Angkor Wat 'Bayon' Style. Cambodia. Overview: A superb Khmer Terracotta fragment of a Male Deity, which once decorated an Angkorian temple near the Siem Reap province of Cambodia. The fragment is an iconic representation of Khmer artistry at its finest, masterfully rendered in realistic human form, with exacting detail and aesthetic alignment of the features. Description:The image is probably that of Shiva, a masculine divinity image, hand-carved in relief, portraying a softly contoured face harmonious within the volume of the head, depicted wearing a conical headdress bound by an interconnected 'diadem' crown, elaborately decorated in bands of rosettes, and floral motif. The indigenous face appears youthful, depicting a serene contemplative expression, reflecting humility and compassion, with incised features of the face. The eyebrows are arched in relief and join in the middle above a prominent nose, almond-shaped eyes with incised iris, a well-shaped mouth with wide lips, a mustache, and elongated earlobes adorned with triangular earring pendants. Incised striated braided hair are indicated at both side of his face. This fragmented portion is a wonderful example, unaltered, with no condition issues. The piece reveals a weathered surface, with a naturally aged reddish-brown patina of molted variations, showing minor surface degradation, and slight evidence of selective erosion throughout.
