Sterling China Company produced vitrified hotel and restaurant dinnerware from 1917 to 2003. Founded by B. E. Allen and a group of investors in Wellsville, Ohio, Sterling China became a major player in the industry. Here are some key points about Sterling China: History: Established in 1917 by Charles Pomeroy, A. B. Allen, William Wells, and Friend DeBolt, the company initially focused on small items like cups, bowls, and coffee mugs. Sterling China pioneered the use of “inlay” patterns in hotel ware and installed the first dipping machine in the hotel china industry. During World War II, Sterling supplied a significant amount of dinnerware for the armed forces. By the 1950s, Sterling China was one of the three largest vitrified hotel and restaurant ware producers. The company operated a plant in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, between 1951 and 1977, producing Caribe China there. Sterling China absorbed the Scammell China Company and its Lamberton China line in 1954. Between 1959 and 1969, Sterling China owned and operated the Wellsville China Company. Although its main plant is in Wellsville, Ohio, Sterling uses an East Liverpool address as its “official” address. The Wellsville plant temporarily closed in 2003 but reopened in January 2004 under new ownership.
