What I have observed over the last few years of repairing hundreds of these radios: These units suffer from capacitor plague. The electrolytic capacitors on the motherboard are prone to failure at this age. There is always atleast 1 but usually around 5 capacitors leaking acid thereby damaging neighboring components, circuit traces and solder pads. This is why these radios are notorious for failure. Many of the original capacitors were only rated for 1000 hours to begin with. For these reasons I replace all 28 of the motherboard’s capacitors with much higher quality capacitors on all these radios I service effectively giving the radios a new lease on life and increased performance.
