The Elegie No.1, best known in its piano solo version, dates from 1874. As much is confirmed by the comparably enigmatic Elegie No.2, which followed in 1877. A somewhat different case, is that of the 'Romance Oubliée' of 1880. Again, this can be found in arrangements for piano solo, violin, and piano, and cello and piano, but at the time Liszt was in contact with Hermann Ritter, inventor of the viola alta. He evidently had this in mind when composing the 'Romance Oubliée' which he dedicated to Ritter. Less unfamiliar, 'La Lugubre Gondola' comes to us, as a composition, in two substantially different forms which are normally heard as piano solos. The cello and piano arrangement played here is contemporaneous.
