Description: Justinian I | AE Decaexanummion Reference: SB 178 Date: 552-562 CE Obverse: D N IVSTINIANVS P P AVG Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Justinian to right. Reverse: A IS P with chi-rho christogram above. TES in exergue Mint: Thessalonica Size: 23.7 mm Weight: 6.76 grams RARE SUBTYPE OF SCARCE, "ODDBALL" DENOMINATION STRUCK ONLY AT THESSALONICA. This particular coin features a Chi-Rho christogram in place of the standard cross above the "I" on the reverse. For reasons that are not entirely clear, the Roman Byzantine mints at Alexandria and Thessalonica struck non-standard coin denominations that were not found elsewhere in the empire. These included the 33-nummus, the 16-nummus (this coin), the 12-nummus, the 8-nummus, the 6-nummus, and the 3-nummus. Very fine and well-struck on irregular flan. Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins. All coins are guaranteed to be genuine and any item found to be otherwise may be returned for a full refund. The most important thing is that you are happy with your new coin(s)! All coins are shipped in PVC-free, archival-grade coin flips and inserts made of acid-free paper Domestic (USA) shipping only, except for international shipments through eBay International Shipping program.
