AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY RONALD REAGAN DISCUSSES HIS DEBATE WITH SEVERAL YALE STUDENTS ON THE VIETNAM WAR, CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT, AND WAR ON POVERTY In December of 1967, Governor Reagan accepted the Yale Chubb Fellowship and gave a speech on the Vietnam War at Yale University. Shortly after the speech, Reagan debated with several Political Science students with St. Anthony Hall, the fraternity of Delta Psi, on the Vietnam War, Civil Rights Movement, and War on Poverty. In the present letter, Reagan discusses his encounter with the students: “The Yale course in practical politics was an unforgettable experience but one I enjoyed. I honestly believe it was better that they started from a hostile position & a premise based on many mis-conceptions. It was a great opportunity to replace fiction in some instances with fact. Nancy & I are both sorry there was no leeway in the schedule for side trips. Our best to Florence & to yourself.”. “I HONESTLY BELIEVE IT WAS BETTER THAT THEY STARTED FROM A HOSTILE POSITION & A PREMISE BASED ON MANY MIS-CONCEPTIONS.
