Synopsis "Rubai" is Arabic for "quatrain", and is used to describe a Persian quatrain, or its derivative form in English and other languages. The plural form of the word, rubaiyat, is used to describe a collection of such quatrains. There are a number of possible rhyme schemes to the rubaiyat form, e.g. AABA, AAAA. In Persian verse, a ruba'i is visually only two lines long, its rhyme falling at the middle and end of the lines. The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is the title that Edward FitzGerald gave to his translation of a selection of poems, originally written in the Persian language and of which there are about a thousand, attributed to Omar Khayyám (1048–1123), a Persian poet, mathematician and astronomer. ---------- About the Author/Illustrator---------- Omar Khayyam, who lived from 1048 to 1123, was a Persian polymath: mathematician, philosopher, astronomer and above all poet. He has also become established as one of the major mathematicians and astronomers of the medieval period. Recognised as the author of the most important treatise on algebra before modern times as reflected in his Treatise on Demonstration of Problems of Algebra giving a geometric method for solving cubic equations by intersecting a hyperbola with a circle. He also contributed to calendar reform and may have proposed a heliocentric theory well before Copernicus. Outside Iran and Persian speaking countries, Khayyam has had impact on literature and societies through translation and works of scholars. The most influential translator of all was Edward FitzGerald who made Khayyam the most famous poet of the East in the West through his celebrated translation and adaptations of Khayyam's rather small number of quatrains in Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. Elihu Vedder (1836 – 1923) was an American symbolist painter, book illustrator, and poet, born in New York City, the son of Dr. Elihu Vedder Sr. and Elizabeth Vedder. His parents were cousins.Vedder trained in New York City with Tompkins H. Matteson, then in Paris with François-Édouard Picot. Finally, he completed his studies in Italy - where he was strongly influenced not only by Italian Renaissance work but also by the modern Macchiaioli painters and the living Italian landscape.Vedder became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1865. He decorated the hallway of the Reading Room of the Washington Library of Congress, and his mural paintings can still be seen there. He is best known for his illustrations for Edward FitzGerald's translation of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, which were a great financial and critical success. ---------- Return Policy---------- If you are unsatisfied with your purchase for any reason, a FULL refund will be issued so long as I am notified within 14 days after you receive your purchase.
