From the front end page - “Harry Lee Wilson, born in 1867, was known during his lifetime as a prankster and wit. It was he who made that famous remark about the Grand Canyon, “At last I know a place to throw my old razor blades.” Mr. Wilson was successful as a novelist and a playwright. Many of his plays, including the smash hit, The Man From Home, were written in collaboration with Booth Tarkington. However, it is for his novels–Bunker Bean, Ma Pettingil, Merton of the Movies, and Ruggles of Red Gap – that he is best known. Harry Leon Wilson died in Carmel, California, in 1939, mourned by generations of readers who loved his books, and secure in his position as a great American humorist.” From the back cover - “Here is a great classic of American humor which spoofs the foibles and fortes of English and American society. It tells the delightfully impish story of Ruggles–an impeccable British valet–who is won in a poker game by a rich American cattleman and goes to live in a rugged Western pioneer town. Frightened of his frontier surroundings and the rough-and-ready people who live there, Ruggles was sure there were Indians behind every bush–but Ruggles came through. He went into business, joined a dramatic society, and it wasn’t long before he became the toast of this madcap society.” Condition – The book is complete and tightly bound.
