Description: Santalum album is an evergreen tree or parasite/hemiparasite in the Santalaceae family. Its native range is from Jawa to Northern Australia. Familiar names include Chandana, Indian Sandalwood, and White Sandalwood. In Hinduism, they are considered a sacred tree for their fragrance and medicinal qualities. It has been over-exploited for its essential oils. The small size of the trees has decimated the woodworking aspect from being over-exploited. They can live to be 100 years old. It parasites another surrounding tree by tapping into the roots and stealing water or nutrients. It grows naturally in dry forests around 2,300 feet in elevation. It can grow to around 30 feet tall but is usually around 5-8 feet tall and wide. The leaves are lanceolate around 2-3 inches long and 1-2 inches wide. The maroon and white flowers are fragrant, around 1/2" inch. It is in bloom from late spring until late fall. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade with average water needs. Zones 10-11 Germination Soak seeds for 24 hours in warm water. Sow seeds 1/2" deep, then tamp seeds into the soil and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 30-60 days.
