Description: SC-143 ".... where freedom is" PMG VF20 $20 Feb. 14, 1777 South Carolina Note Click images to enlarge Description Rare, Choice, and signed by at least (2) Revolutionary War Solders that saw action the the American Revolutionary War. February 14, 1777 "TWENTY DOLLARS" South Carolina Colonial Currency Note. Conservatively graded & certified by PMG as VF20, with the look of a slightly better grade. There are no problems, and there are no pin holes. Nice eye-appeal for the grade with a faded serial number and three bold signatures. Darkly inked on both sides including the "Bird escaping from cage" emblem with the Latin motto "IBI PATRIA UBI LIBERTAS" which translates as "Here in our country is where freedom is". The Bird escaping its cage vignette undoubtedly represents the American Colonies escaping British rule. Only 6,160 of these notes were originally printed. Very few of them have survived, especially in such nice condition as this example. The serial number has faded with the pasting of time (247 years), but three of the four signatures are still boldly signed. They are William Logan, Samuel Legare, and William Banbury. William Logan, fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780 as a Private in the 1st North Carolina Battalion commanded by Colonel Thomas Clark. Samuel Legare, served as a Lieutenant in the Charles Town District Regiment of the South Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary War. Newman lists a value of $1,000 for a note in VF condition (VF20) on page 425 (see photo). This is an authentic & historical item that was printed in 1777 and issued during the Revolutionary War (1775-83), just a few months after the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
