Reese was a native of Germany and played on the German Olympic soccer team at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. He completed his medical studies at the University of Kiel in 1917 and was a decorated World War I veteran of the German Navy. He was recruited to the University of Wisconsin in 1924 as a neurologist and was named chairman of the Department of Neuropsychiatry in 1940. When the department split in 1956, he continued to serve as chairman of the Department of Neurology until his retirement in 1962. He continued research until his death in 1973
