Professionally conserved with a wax canvas lining. Original stretcher, modern frame. Nicholas Winfield Scott Leighton (1847-1898) was an American painter highly regarded for his equestrian paintings and farm scenes. Born in Auburn, Maine, he was taught how to paint by Harrison Bird Brown in Portland. Unable to make a living as an artist in Maine, he eventually moved to Boston, where his abilities were quickly recognized. It wasn't long before major lithographic firms were reproducing his work. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1883, 1886, and 1887. Among his important works are “Three Veterans,” “The Smugglers,” and “In the Stable.” This painting, “The Harvesters,” is a NewEngland setting, possibly Massachusetts.
