These are photographs from the 1939 and 1940 General Motors “FLINT MOTOR FESTIVAL PARADE” held in August in both years. General Motors was founded in Flint and was initially just a holding company. It was established by William C. Durant in 1908, who ran a carriage business in Flint. Durant took a hodgepodge of small auto companies and consolidated a bunch of young entrepreneurial engineers, inventors and budding automakers, including companies such as Buick, Cadillac, Oakland and Reliance Motor Trucks, to form General Motors! This was a Floral Float theme Community and local Automotive manufacturing industry event. It has been said there were 100,000 parade goes at the 1940 parade, spread out through the Downtown Area of the City, nicknamed “Vehicle City!” Much of the parade took place on Saginaw Street in Downtown Flint, Genesee County, Michigan. This is not the GM's “Parade of Progress” in which new automobiles and featured huge buses, called GM Futurliners Coaches; eight in the beginning and 12 in later years. These buses, futuristic car designs, and current new company models being showcased went on three extended tours of the country from 1936 to 1956 and left a lasting impression on those who saw them.
