Description: Seiko 5ACTUS SS from 1969 in very good condition, all original except the bracelet which is new, quality, stainless steel, Duralex brand. I'm not sure but I think the "SS" sub brand was a Japanese domestic release only. And also not sure that the "SS" stands for "Second Setting". All the SS models I've seen house the 6106 movement which features hacking (stopping the watch when setting the time) allowing for syncronised setting. The condition is, overall, very good. Polished index markers, "Seiko" logo, "SS" logo and date window appear mint. The iridescent white dial shows some aging mainly between the 1 and 2 baton. The hands also show some aging, see the close up photo. I found the iridescence hard to photograph. The case has been lightly re-finished and presents beautifully. The crystal is new, perspex, after market. The crown is new, original replacement. The 6106A movement is a variation on the 6119 which is, in my opinion, Seiko's best ever movement. It features hacking. It is in pristine condition. It has just been professionally overhauled/serviced and functions perfectly. International buyers; Postage cost includes insurance. The purchaser is responsible for any import duty and/or taxes. Please be aware that, in recent times, international postage is experiencing longer than usual delays. Overhaul/Service Explained I am often asked about what an overhaul entails. So I have started adding a photo of the movement, disassembled ready to go through the cleaning machine. All old dried up lubricants, crud and anything else that shouldn't be there is cleaned away. Then, it is reassembled, lubricated, adjustments made and regulated.SEIKO 5 HISTORY (provided by a colleague trading on Ebay as market*master):First released in late 1963 the Original Seiko 5 is a modified SEIKO SPORTSMATIC.Seiko decided they needed an affordable watch that was versatile and durable. An everyday device that could handle a wide variety of different situations and environments. So was born the '5' concept. The '5' came from the 5 features they wanted to incorporate into the watch. These were:1. Automatic winding2. Day/date display3. Water resistance4. Recessed crown at the 4 o’clock position5. Integrated metal braceletThe '5' was an immediate success and has gone on to become the most successful line of mechanical watches in history. About vintage mechanical watches: A vintage mechanical watch will not perform like a modern quartz (electronic) watch. Also, with age comes fragility and it may no longer be ideal as a daily wearer. It should be treated for what it is, something old, classical and special. Treat it as you would a vintage car - not ideal to use as a “daily driver”. Keep it in the condition at which you bought it and it will hold or, indeed, increase its value. Use it every day and it will go backwards. About Me: I am a born again watchmaker! I finished my apprenticeship in 1973 having completed technical training at the RMIT, Melbourne. In the early 80s I went into retail (jewellery and watches). In the mid 90s I came to realise that the watches that once were common had become rare and I began to appreciate their beauty both aesthetically and mechanically. That’s when I started collecting classics. When covid hit, I retired from retail, set up a workshop at home, regained my skills and am now restoring classics with a passion.
