Description: Selmer Paris Professional Model 31 Bass Clarinet to low Eb. Professional keywork features advanced octave mechanism with neck vent, adjustable neck for intonation, articulated C#, lefthand G#/Ab key, and adjustable right thumb rest. It has a lyre holder however neckstrap rings are not present. Serial number E7688 places its fabrication in the mid 1980s. This bass would be from one of the first production years after Selmer Paris made significant improvements to the keywork including improved octave mechanism action, sturdier joint couplings, improved righthand trill mechanisms, and more ergonomic keywork, in addition to improvements in intonation. Great candidate for low C extension for a fraction of the cost of a factory low C. This bass has solid intonation especially in the lower range and the hallmark thick, velvety bass voice that Selmer Paris basses are known for. It has been regularly and recently serviced, particularly to silence the typically clangy pinky keywork. The wood is in flawless condition--no cracks or tenon repairs. Tenons and cork are in great condition. Pads are in good condition with some newer. Neck and bell have light scratches as is typical for the age but will shine with a polish. Touchpieces do not show typical wear with no silver flaking. Bell has the number 76 stamped which is a bit of a mystery. I have not found any information on what this number represents or that Selmer Paris ever made a model 76. Typically the stamped bell number reflects the instrument's model number. It could be a model number variation that was produced for a specific market in the 80s or a mismatch from the body. In any case, the mechanism to Eb couples and fuctions perfectly. Newer Protec case, floor peg, and a tin of 5 unused Alexander Classique 3.5 reeds are included. No mouthpiece. This bass would be ideal as a step-up instrument for students, gig doublers, and community band players. Also listed on Reverb.
