Description: You are purchasing a: Sheila's Wood Figurine Décor LOEW'S GRAND Atlanta, Georgia Margaret Mitchell's Story of the Old South GONE WITH THE WIND The Grand first opened its doors on the evening of Friday, February 10, 1893. Having its beginnings as the floundering construction of a Masonic Temple, De. Give redirected the project and spared no expense in what was then the country's "third largest theatre." The Grand was fitted with the "amazing novelty" of electric lighting In 1916, the Grand came under new management from the Loew's Theatres. The Loew's Grand Theatre held the world premiere of Gone with the Wind, Friday, December 15, 1939. A single ticket to the premiere went for ten dollars, at a time when the average evening box-office tab was fifty cents. GWTW was the picture the entire nation was waiting to see - a picture written by a local author about Atlanta and Atlantans. This would be the social event of the century. The night of the premier the facade of Tara towered over the theatre entrance. Above the facade, the faces of Scarlett and Rhett touched lips within an enormous full colored medallion. Spotlights were trained on the theatre marquee, while the rays of five searchlights probed the night sky. Streamers of smilax, laurel and Confederate flags festooned the building. That evening, the word went out on wire services, newsreels, and radio shows: Gone with the Wind was an overwhelming success.
