The pulleys should also be aligned so the belt runs straight from one to the other. Normally, the belt will run from the larger pulley on the motor to the smaller pulley on the spindle. The other position is for more power at lower RPM and requires slightly more belt tension because the smaller drive pulley is not as efficient.
