Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ........ This is a rare autographed broadside (single page playbill) from the Pre-Broadway tryout of the ARTHUR SCHWARTZ and DOROTHY FIELDS musical comedy "A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN" at the Forrest Theatre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (The production would open April 19th, 1951 at the Alvin Theatre in New York City and run for 267 performances.) ..... The musical starred SHIRLEY BOOTH and JOHNNY JOHNSTON (who signed the front) and featured MARCIA VAN DYKE, NATHANIEL FREY, NOMI MITTY and LOU WILLS, Jr. ..... CREDITS: Book by BETTY SMITH and GEORGE ABBOTT based on Betty Smith's novel; Music by ARTHUR SCHWARTZ; Lyrics by DOROTHY FIELDS; Sets designed by JO MIELZINER; Costumes designed by IRENE SHARAFF; Choreographed by HERBERT ROSS; Directed by GEORGE ABBOTT; Produced by GEORGE ABBOTT in association with ROBERT FRYER ..... DETAILS: The single page, two-sided playbill measures 5 5/8" X 8 1/2" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes and list of musical numbers, but no cast photos or bios ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "The Bride Wore Something Old" and "Tuscaloosa" which were cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: With the exception of minor creasing, this playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian.
