Dmitri Shostakovich expressed a life-long interest in Jewish folk music and would draw to himself some of the most talented Jewish composers and musicians living in the Soviet Union. The present program explores the chamber music of Shostakovich and his "Jewish circle." Contemporary to Shostakovich’s Second Piano Trio is the Piano Trio of Shostakovich’s friend, Mieczyslaw Weinberg. It is therefore little wonder that some of the two composers’ works exhibit certain similarities. However, we should remember that not only was Weinberg influenced by Shostakovich, but also vice versa. Another of Shostakovich’s Jewish friends was the composer Alexander Weprik, a gifted musician who had been a repeated target of anti-Semitic purges.
