Thanks for looking!5.0 out of 5 stars Ahh, shopping as it used to be, and never will be again.Having worked for Bullock's many moons ago, I was really excited to see this book. I went to several training meetings at this store. They hadn't really changed the decor of the store after many decades, and they did not need to-- one of the best examples of Art Deco decor and architecture in the entire country. The pictures in the book are beautiful, it's just too bad they are not in color. Too many stores today, especially the really fancy ones, are just generic looking symphonies in white or beige. Let's call it the "McDonald's effect". Same, same, same, from one branch to the next. The lack of taste/imagination on the part of today's retailers is just really, really sad. I guess they only know how to cut corners and slash budgets, thinking we, the consumer, are too stupid to know or care. Mr. Bullock did not have the obvious contempt for the consumer today's owners/corporations have-- he cared about his customers (imagine that!). John Bullock was one of the best retailers this country ever had, and Ms. Davis is to be thanked for sharing his story. "To build a business that will never know completion"-- a bunch of stupid Macy's executives put paid to that!--Milt 5.0 out of 5 stars Every remarkable building has an amazing story behind it and this is no exceptionEvery remarkable building has an amazing story behind it and this is no exception. We recently toured the building now that it serves as a library and office space for Southwestern Law School. It is a wonderful thing that the building was able to be preserved and continue to be useful for generations to come. Makes us all the more regretful about the many other buildings that were lost to the developers voracious maw!--Linda M. Hanna 4.0 out of 5 stars Bullocks Wilshire is a metaphor of Los AngelesBullocks Wilshire represented Los Angeles during the heyday of Hollywood. Ms. Davis presents a well-researched homage to this architectural wonder and social icon, which came to be the place to see and be seen by the movers and shakers, gods and goddesses of the day. What could have been a great book ends on a dubious note. Ms. Davis, an Alumna of Southwestern School of Law, sounds the praises of her alma mater, which took over the building after the store's demise in 1993, turning it into a library.--T. Wahl
