Sinclair Lewis, Three Book Set: Arrowsmith, Babbitt, Work of Art. Very Good!

Description: Sinclair Lewis, Three Novels--Arrowsmith, Babbitt, Work of Art. P. F. Collier and Sons, Hardcover Books. No Dust Jackets. Arrowsmith (1925), Babbitt (1922), Work of Art (1934) printed in the Collier "Nobel Prize" series of Lewis's works. with the Alfred Nobel image embossed on the cover, along with the author's signature in gold leaf on the cover and the spine. The book boards for each book are square and secure; the text is clean. No creased or dog-eared pages in the text, although Babbitt on page 75-76 does have a tiny crinkle to top right of page. No underlining, hi-lighting or marginalia or marks in the text. No ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, plates, or labels. Books appear unopened and unread. Some yellowing due to age, particularly to inner paste downs. Pictures are of the actual books being offered for sale. In 1930, Lewis was the first American writer to receive a Nobel Prize. His ability for mimicry and for detailed observation made him a true “photographer” of life. Indeed, his novels are almost historical documents. He documented a fixed period in American history, the frustrations and disillusionments of one generation. The set includes these three books: 1. Arrowsmith, first published in 1925, although the copyright page lists 1924, which was a deluxe edition consisting of 500 copies on handmade paper, numbered and signed by the author. It won the 1926 Pulitzer Prize (which Lewis declined). Lewis was greatly assisted in its preparation by science writer Paul de Kruif, who received 25% of the royalties on sales, although Lewis was listed as the sole author. Arrowsmith is an early major novel dealing with the culture of science. It was written in the period after the reforms of medical education flowing from the Flexner Report on Medical Education in the United States and Canada: A Report to the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, 1910, which had called on medical schools in the United States to adhere to mainstream science in their teaching and research. The book was adapted by Hollywood as Arrowsmith in 1931, starring Ronald Colman and Helen Hayes. Good condition except for the age yellowing. Text block also shows some age toning and spotting. 2. Babbitt, first published in 1922, is a satirical novel about American culture and society that critiques the vacuity of middle-class life and the social pressure toward conformity. The controversy provoked by Babbitt was influential in the decision to award the Nobel Prize in Literature to Lewis in 1930.The novel has been filmed twice, once as a silent in 1924 and remade as a talkie in 1934.The word Babbitt has entered the English language as a "person and especially a business or professional man who conforms unthinkingly to prevailing middle-class standards". Good condition. Small darker stain to top of text block, which I did not try to remove to preserve the patina. 3. Work of Art, first published in 1934, explores the life of a struggling artist named Claude Wheeler. The story is set in the early 20th century and takes place in the fictional town of Zenith, located in the Midwest. The novel follows Claude’s journey as he tries to find his place in the world and come to terms with his own identity. He struggles to make ends meet and is constantly torn between his desire to create art and his need to make a living. As the story progresses, Claude becomes disillusioned with the art world and begins to question his own talent. He also becomes involved in a love triangle with two women, Enid and Mahailey, which further complicates his life. Good condition.
