Description: **** READ FULL LISTING - IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT THEHAMMER'S "FLOATING" HAMMER NOSE (Not Spring-Loaded),The "NON-BEVELED" MOUNTING HOLE, andINFO ON COMPATIBLE MODELS **** SCARCE FIND: The HOLY GRAIL of Smith & Wesson K-Frame Stainless Centerfire Hammers. Up for sale is an Exceptionally Nice condition, clean K-Frame Stainless Target Hammer Assembly that originated from a well cared-for Smith & Wesson 66-2 revolver. This Hammer boasts the much sought-after, and very scarce full-width .500" Target Spur that was seen much more on larger N-Frame models, and much less on the K-Frame models. This Hammer Assembly exhibits only light & minor handling marks, and has most certainly escaped the test of time without incurring any offensive dings, dents, scratches or other flaws. There are a few faint rub marks in the sides of the Hammer body's finish from the normal operation of the Hammer pivoting back and forth in typical use. The FLOATING Hammer Nose shows barely any evidence of wear, the contact point that engages the base of the Hammer (to where it connects and locks in double-action mode to the top of the Trigger, once installed) is clean and unaltered: So many times we see examples of these Hammers that have succumbed to someone's attempt at an "action job" ... No such alteration has been done to this Hammer!! Most remarkably, the Checkering on the Hammer Spur - although not pristine perfect - is in incredibly good shape, and is actually cut cleanly and evenly! THAT, in itself is perhaps what would be considered the most valuable aspect to a collector or restoration specialist. Smith and Wesson sometimes produced hammers where the checkering on the spurs was cut uneven, or the depth on the back of the spur wasn't deep enough / looked "mushed", etc. The Hammer Assembly is mechanically sound: All installed and internal components function as they should. We also want to mention specifically that the Hammer Spur is not bent, nor cracked or fractured in any way - this has been checked specifically, under magnification, to ensure the integrity of the piece. Priced per exceptional condition, and utter scarcity of the "Full Target" K-Frame Stainless, FORGED Hammer Assemblies - especially in such nice condition and full functionality. COMPATIBILITY WARNING #1 of 2 - FLOATING HAMMER NOSE - PLEASE READ IN DETAIL: This Hammer Assembly's Hammer Nose is a "Floating" Hammer Nose, meaning it is not Spring-Loaded - versus just about all S&W Forged Centerfire Hammers that were produced later on... First to note: If your existing Hammer that you are replacing also had a Floating Hammer Nose, this Hammer would work with your application with no issue, same Hammer (Make sure to STILL READ Compatibility Warning #2 of 2 Below). CONVERSELY, if your revolver DID have a Spring-Loaded Hammer Nose, it may or may not accept this Hammer, READ BELOW: Although there is undoubtedly some debate about cross-compatibility between Hammers with or without the "spring-loaded" feature of the Hammer Nose, we generally recommend to ONLY USE THIS HAMMER ON A REVOLVER THAT ALSO HAD A FLOATING HAMMER NOSE. Reason being, many of the older K-Frame revolvers that had a Floating Hammer Nose also had a slightly more generous vertical opening in the frame that would accommodate entry of the Hammer Nose into the Frame, and then the Hammer Bushing when the Hammer is dropped, even if the Hammer Nose was elevated. On Later models, that opening was NOT as generous, as the Spring-Loaded Hammer Nose pushes the Nose into a "Down" position prior to entering that opening.. So, you DO NOT want a Floating Hammer Nose-Type Hammer deployed with the Nose UP, in a frame with the smaller opening, as the Hammer Nose may catch on the rear of the Frame!! You can check a Spring-Loaded Hammer Nose for this by cocking the UNLOADED revolver, holding the Spring-Loaded Hammer Nose in the "UP" Position, and then VERY SLOWLY releasing the Hammer, to see if the Hammer Nose will catch on the Frame. If it DOES, then DO NOT BUY this Hammer Assembly. If it drops and clears into the hole in the frame - even with the Hammer Nose being held upwards - then you should be good to go with the Hammer in this Listing. (In other words, if your original Hammer has a Spring-Loaded Hammer Nose, we would recommend AGAINST buying this Assembly - Unless you check specifically what's stated above.) Again, this is sort of a case-by-case basis, but we feel it should be disclosed to ensure ease and compatibility of your replacement and to remove the risk of damage to your revolver when determining cross-compatibility. As Always, gun parts should be inspected and installed by a competent, licensed Gunsmith. COMPATIBILITY WARNING #2 of 2 - THERE IS NO "BEVELED EDGE" ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE HOLE IN THE BASE OF THE HAMMER, rendering it non-installable in Revolvers that DID have a Beveled Edge on one side of the hole in the bottom - PLEASE READ IN DETAIL: When you remove a S&W Vintage Hammer from the revolver, you will notice that the "Stud" that sticks out of the frame that the Hammer pivots on is a straight stud that is the same diameter stud from the tip of the stud all the way down to where it meets the frame. After about 1985, Smith & Wesson changed the design of that stud so it had a "Radius" at the base of the stud - in other words, it spanned out slightly, in order to give the stud more strength and integrity. This is a common machining technique that adds strength to any protruding stud or axis, in many applications. As the result of the later models having the Radius - or curved outward base of the stud (Smith & Wesson refers to this as the "Radius Stud Package"), THE HOLE ON THE BASE OF THE HAMMER ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE HAMMER BODY WAS CHANGED TO HAVE A SLIGHT BEVEL CUT IN THE EDGE OF THE HOLE, WHICH ALLOWS THE HAMMER TO SEAT ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FRAME: THE BEVELED CUT ON THE HAMMER'S MOUNTING HOLE ACCOMMODATES THE SHAPE OF THE ADDITIONAL MATERIAL OF THE RADIUS THAT'S ON THE BASE OF THE STUD. IF YOU ATTEMPT TO INSTALL THE HAMMER IN THIS LISTING (WHICH DOES NOT HAVE THAT BEVEL-EDGED HOLE) ON A LATER REVOLVER THAT HAS THE ADDED RADIUS ON THE BASE OF THE HAMMER STUD, IT WILL NOT SEAT ALL THE WAY TO THE FRAME AND YOU WILL NOT GET THE SIDEPLATE BACK ON COMPLETELY - AND YOU WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY WRECK THE HAMMER IF YOU TRY TO "FORCE IT IN"!!! - So, if the Hammer you are replacing has that Beveled edge on the Left Side mounting hole on the it, PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE THE HAMMER IN THIS LISTING. (Look instead for a Target Hammer that would have come from a Model 66-3, for example..) As a guide, to the Best of our Knowledge, you can see below what we believe to be an accurate list of S&W Stainless K-Frame revolvers that WOULD accept this Hammer Assembly: COMPATIBLE FRAME / MODELS: *** DO NOT USE on any N-Frame Model, like the 629*** DO NOT USE on any L-Frame Model, like the 686 This Hammer Assembly MUST be used on a Vintage/Early Stainless S&W K-Frame model, such as the Model 64, 65, 66, and 67, produced from approximately 1970 thru 1985 (If you are not sure about the date of production of your revolver, contact us PRIOR to purchase to verify compatibility). Compatible models - to the Best of our Knowledge - would be as follows: - Model 64 No Dash, 64-1, 64-2 and 64-3 (NOT compatible with the 64-4, 64-5 or beyond...) - Model 65-1, 65-2 and 65-3 (NOT compatible with the 65-4, 65-5 or beyond... Nor ANY of the "Ladysmith" Model 65) - Model 66 No Dash, 66-1 and 66-2 (NOT compatible with the 66-3, 66-4 or beyond...) - Model 67 No Dash and 67-1 (NOT compatible with the 67-2, 67-3 or beyond...) - Model 68 No Dash, 68-1 and 68-2 Finally, the Hammer in this Listing is a Centerfire Hammer, and CANNOT be used on a 617 or a 648!! Also keep in mind that this Hammer has a Hammer Nose, which means the "Firing Pin" is mounted to the Hammer Itself, and cannot be used on a Late-Model, or Modern S&W Revolver that came with a Hammer with a Flat Face that strikes an internally-mounted Firing Pin. As with any vintage gun parts there may be minor imperfections and we have attempted to capture a fair rendition of the condition of the Assembly in the image set. See photos for full description.
