Description: Offered is this charming souvenir plate made by Homer Laughlin in the 1950s. It commemorates the buildings of Central State College in Edmond, Oklahoma. That school has since been renamed the University of Central Oklahoma. The buildings depicted are: Old North Tower 1892 Administration Building 1904 Murdaugh Hall 1936 “Y” Chapel of Song 1949 Student Union 1952 The inscription on the back reads: Central State College, founded December 24, 1890 as the Territorial Norman (Normal) School, was the first institution of higher learning established in what is now Oklahoma. Old North Tower is an historic landmark and the symbol of the college. Through the efforts of the Y.W.C.A. of Central State the “Y” Chapel of Song was presented to the college in June 1949. The interior is decorated with students’ work in stained glass, carved wood, ceramic tile, tooled leather and wrought iron. A certificate of merit for its Architectural Design was award by the Oklahoma Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in 1953. This plate is a project of the Y.W.C.A. The plate is off-white with red glaze. A gold band encircles the edge. The plate measures 10 inches in diameter (25.5 cm). Very good used condition with no chips or cracks.
