Eligibility for membership included those veterans who served in armed conflict during the Spanish American War, which was fought between April & August 1898, or during the Philippine American War 1889-1902 (two separate wars that the U.S. Government has always treated as one conflict.) Over 325,000 Americans served in the Spanish American War, with U.S. forces in the Philippine-American War peaking at over 70,000. Since most United Spanish War Veterans Medals have exceeded 100 years of age and up, the original cloth ribbons, even those few that survive intact, deteriorate each time they are touched or exposed to the elements, and are especially susceptible to fading from the sun or harsh incandescent lighting. So, surviving medals in good condition are increasingly rare, especially where the original cloth ribbon is concerned.
