The inscription around the edge of the medal is “S Alphonsus de Ligouri Priez Pour N(ous)” which means “Saint Alphonsus Ligouri Pray For Us.” The reverse side shows Blessed Virgin Mary holding Baby Jesus on her lap with two angels watching over them. The French inscription is “N(otre) D(ame) Du Perp(etuel) Secours Priez P(our) N(ous)” which means “Our Lady Of Perpetual Help Pray For Us.” St Alphonsus Ligouri was born into nobility, and he was a child prodigy. He was well-educated, and received his doctorate in law from the University of Naples at age 16. As he matured he felt a calling to the religious life and was ordained a priest when he was 29. St Alphonsus was known for his simple style of preaching, and his gentle, understanding way in the confessional. He founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer order, which are better known as Redemptorists. St Alphonsus was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX in 1871.
