Description: St. John Henry Newman – Exclusive Photo Restoration – Catholic Art Print – Archival Quality Kind and thoughtful, St. John Henry Newman (1801-1890) was one of the towering intellects of the 19th Century. A devout man, he started off in the Anglican Church, entered the priesthood, but eventually converted when he came to the conclusion that the Catholic Faith was the one true Church. He became a Roman Catholic priest and then a cardinal. His conversion stemmed from the idea, which he took decades to develop in books and sermons, that there was a law of historical development to Christian society, and that the Catholic Church of contemporary times was precisely the development of the early Church of the first few centuries after Christ. He argued that Protestant churches represented a break in this development, both in doctrine and in devotion. His last sermon as an Anglican was called "The Parting of Friends." - (source: Britannica.com) Because of his lofty, systematic thinking, he is a patron Saint of students, teachers, and professors. Newman Centers at the universities are named after him. Feast Day October 9.
