Description: Lovely section of Stegodon tooth, approx 18cm x 10cm and 856 grams Stegodon where thought to be related to modern elephants but have now been clasified as beloning to the exstinct family Stegolophodon. They were distinctive with long tusks that were close together forcing the trunk to sit over to the side of them. This tooth comes from Java, Indonesia and is likely to be 2.6-1.8 million years old and belong to the species Stegodon trigonocephalus. Not a common fossil to pick up in local fossil shops as the numbers currently available are very low compaired to teeth from other species like the wooly mammoth. Java is also famous for its pygmy species of stegodon. Add this exotic fossil to your collection :).
