This is a stunning huge antique French crucifix bénitier dating from the Napoleon III era C 1860. It is very decorative and architectural and is an exceptional example of it's type. It is made in wood and is covered in a gorgeous sumptuous red silk velvet. The cross is made in gilded filigree and has decorative scrollwork to the extremeties. Above the head of Christ are the letters INRI. At the base of the cross is the holy water stoup. It is made in spelter and has a fabulous dark pewter hue. The red silk velvet is still bright and beautiful with just a little wear to the edges. The holy water stoop is firmly attached to the wooden back but will move slightly if pushed. There is a maker's / retailer's label on the back of the cross and a ring for hanging on a wall. It measures :- 53.5 cm (21 inches) high x 30.5 cm (12 inches) wide x 7 cm (2.75 inches) deep.
