Tiger Shark!" is the title of this 55 year-old copy of Sub-Mariner issue 5, published by Marvel in 1968 and brought to you by Roy Thomas and John Buscema and featuring the first ever appearance of Tiger Shark, not to mention a couple of other first appearances as well -- namely Doctor Dorcas, and Diane Arliss (currently known as Diane Newell). With Sub-Mariner finally making his MCU debut in the Black Panther/Wakanda Forever movie, the demand for these old Silver Age issues will only continue to grow, so get your copies now! I've had this book for decades, and it was well-cared for, stored away virtually undisturbed in all that time. Before offering it for sale, I carefully took the time to eyeball each page to make sure there was nothing obvious hiding in there that might otherwise be missed. Please note that this copy was printed without an upper staple, so there is a printing detect, but read on... Surfaceflat and shiny copy (really nice shine), and outside of that one obvious abrasion at the CCA box, about as smooth to the touch as any new copyEdge Wearthe CCA box missing counts as edge wear, so let's get that out of the way first -- that is a scuff mark of some kind, and it tore away the surface of the CCA box. As you can see from the photo of the inside front cover, the page is still intact, but that is obviously the one major defect of this book, and the primary reason it drops to a 5.0 copy rather than the slam-dunk 7.0 copy it would have been. Other than that, see for yourself that the edge wear everywhere else is minimal.Overall Wearit is really not worn -- a beautiful copyFolds/Creasesno creases; only the faintest hint of a corner fold on back lower-left (way too faint to show in photos)Wrinklingnone -- this baby is smooth!Cornerssome blunting (easily seen in photos) -- upper-left corner has "hanging chad"Printing Defectswas printed without an upper staple -- there are no holes at all -- nothing to indicate that an upper staple was ever present -- but I didn't even notice this until I got to the centerfold (see close-up) when I was paging through it -- everything is bound and holding together nicely.Arrival Stampsa "10" written near the upper edge of the back cover.Spinethe "hanging chad" at the top was already mentioned -- otherwise, it's a solid spine with only moderate wear and a handful of small spine ticks. A couple of little stress lines right at lower staple. Looks great!Spine Rollabsolutely noneTears/Splitsthe CCA box scuff I've covered already, and the tip of the upper-left cornerStaplesagain, no upper ever existed on this one, and the lower looks good and go all the way through to the centerfold.Back coverslightly faded, not as white as it must have been a half-century ago, with only minor wear, though I note a pinkish hue to it in the center areas (visible in photos -- also visible on inner back cover), almost like some of that bold "NOW ON SALE" red on the last inner page bled through to the back when first printed.Smudgessmall smudge on front, just under Namor (visible in one photo) -- that seems to be the only one, and I held the book up to the light to checkSurface build-upeven under a magnifying glass, I see only just a bit here -- the book seems to have been stored away properly early in its lifetime.Inner coversslight Silver Age tanning, and the bit of pinkish bleed-through I mentioned above, but clean.Page colorcream to off-whitePage conditionin excellent shape with no sign of brittleness; and despite the missing upper staple, everything seems well attached -- nothing loose at all.BOTTOM LINEAn amazingly shiny copy with an obvious defect in the missing CCA box and one printing defect as well. This would absolutely grade at about FN/VF were it not for that CCA box problem -- I brutally demoted this obviously gorgeous copy down two grades as a result. You can look at the photos and see how well-preserved, slick and shiny this baby is, but it is what it is. If the NM, or even VF prices of this book are making you gag, and you can live with a beautiful-looking copy of this KEY ISSUE with one glaring defect, then perhaps this one will do (not to mention that I've tried to price it more at the VG+ level, so take advantage)! Do your research and find the other copies listed out there that claim that they're around this condition, and you'll often find copies that are clearly more worn or wrinkled than this one, or they give you two pictures only and don't even take the time to describe the book, so you're left with no idea of what you're getting, so how on earth would you even know? See what they're asking, and you'll find that this copy is competitively priced. Where do you get more details or camera angles than what I've provided? ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE! Look at my feedback and you'll see "item as described" posted over and over again! I cannot believe other sellers expect you to make a purchase decision with just one or two photos -- ridiculous -- you always see what you're getting from me!
