A traditional Japanese event that has continued since the Heian period: Hinamatsuri. Hinamatsuri is an event held on March 3rd to pray for the arrival of spring and the healthy growth and happiness of girls. Since the Edo period, the custom of displaying dolls to pray for good health has taken root, and Hina dolls have been made. The origin of Hina dolls is said to be the simple dolls used in the "Nagashi Hina" event held on the Joshi festival from the Nara and Heian periods, in which people transferred their own impurities and misfortunes to dolls (hitogata) and then floated them down a river or into the sea for purification. Around the same time, among the princesses of the Heian aristocracy, "Hina-asobi," a game of house-play with dolls made of paper and plants, was popular. This is also thought to be the prototype of Hina dolls. Hina dolls, which evolved from dolls (hitogata), were originally standing, but from the mid-Edo period, sitting dolls became mainstream. Sitting dolls are common in modern times, but standing dolls are actually older and are also called "the original dolls" because of their depth of history. They are generally more formal than standing dolls. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The meaning behind wisteria, pine, bamboo, and chrysanthemum patterns on kimonoWisteria flower: Growing wild in Japan since ancient times, its gorgeous clusters of flowers resemble ears of rice, and are loved as motifs that pray for a good harvest and prosperity of descendantsPine: Pine is an evergreen tree that does not change color and can live for a thousand years, so it is considered an auspicious motif that symbolizes longevity. It has been designed in various ways since the Heian period and is a highly elegant motifBamboo: It is considered a symbol of good fortune due to its straight, vigorous growth and the Chinese legend that the phoenix eats its fruit, and because it does not wither even in winter, it represents "immortality," "longevity," and "strength." The hollow stem also represents purity, with no front or back.Chrysanthemum: It represents immortality, long life, good health, and warding off evil spirits. It also represents spiritual and physical fulfillment, stability, nobility, and calm. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Among the many works of Suigai, this Tachibina doll is a masterpiece of overwhelming beauty, as it was made as a Hina-ningyo to celebrate Hinamatsuri(Girls'day) on March 3rd every year. It is also very distinctive, with gorgeous and elegant colors and designs that are rarely seen in other works. Please check carefully the condition of the item for any scratches, marks or stains referred to above from t he photos shown before you purchase.Important: Suggestions for the care of traditional hand painted Japanese kokeshi dolls. 1. Do not touch with wet hands!; 2. Clean with a soft, dry, cloth only - using a wet cloth will cause the natural colored inks or dyes to smear!; and, 3. Display out of direct sunlight - the natural inks will, unfortunately, fade in time. If you have any questions or need any additional photos please contact us. Payment ◆ By ebay payment method only.
