But despite this slighting reference to the lowly origin of Kabuki on the river beds of Kyoto, Harunobu designed a considerable number of actor prints during his early years. This hosoban actor design by Harunobu depicts Õtani Hiroji III as Ono no Yoshizane in the play Ono no Töfu Aoyagi Suzuri (The Poet Ono no Töfü's Young Willow Inkstone), presented at the opening of the Morita-za on August 12, 1762. The leading male role of Ono no Töfü was played by Onoe Kikugoro I. Yoshizane, a younger cousin of Ono no Töfü, is charged with the duty of guarding Prince Tsukuba no Miya. During his tenure of responsibility, he marries Omachi, the daughter of a sculptor of Shizuhara. In the third act, subtitled Rokudo no Tsuji (Crossroad of the Six Ways), Omachi, played by Osagawa Tsuneyo, sacrifices her life to save the prince. Another notable scene is that in which Yoshizane puts his own son to the sword as a substitute for the prince. Hiroji III was a pupil of the second generation Oani Hiroji, succeeding to the family name in 1762.
