Description: Phlox maculata is an erect perennial with strong slender unbranched stems. The stems are smooth, green and spotted or streaked with purple. The flowers are about ¾ inch across and have yellow-tipped stamens. Leaves: Glossy green, lance-shaped leaves that are 2–5 inches long and taper to a pointed or blunt tip. The leaves are arranged in opposite pairs along the stems. Stems: Erect, unbranched stems that are usually purplish or streaked with purple. Growth: Upright plants that grow 2–3 ft tall and 1–2 ft wide. Bloom time: Blooms in early summer and can continue into late summer or fall. Habitat: Native to eastern North America, it typically grows in moist meadows, low woods, and riverbanks.
