Marine Life－Shark and Green Sea Turtle To promote the conservation of marine life, Chunghwa Post is specially collaborating with the Republic of Palau Postal Service to separately release souvenir sheets containing two stamps on sharks and green sea turtles. These separately released sheets make use of the same illustrations and topics. One of the stamps will feature Carcharhinus melanopterus and the other will feature Chelonia mydas. The backgrounds will feature sea views of the Palau islands and vivid scenery of the sea floor in a location off Taiwan coast. The designs follow: 1. Carcharhinus melanopterus (NT$13): Small to average in size, spindle shaped, the species is named for the prominent black tips of its fins. Viviparous, it is mainly found near coastlines in the Indian and Pacific oceans. It can be seen in the waters of both Taiwan and Palau. Because of the threats posed to its populations, it has been designated as a “Near Threatened” species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). 2. Chelonia mydas (NT$28): This species is of average to large size among sea turtles. Their main sources of foods are seaweeds and sea grasses, which cause their body fat to turn green ─ a coloration that is the source of their name. Their range is spread throughout tropical and subtropical coastal waters. Because they are often mistakenly caught in fishing nets, the IUCN has designated them an “Endangered” species. In Taiwan, the species has been designated as “Endangered” under the Wildlife Conservation Act. A refuge of Chelonia mydas has been established on Wang-an Island in Penghu, Taiwan.
