Description: The Autobiography of Lincoln Steffens. 1931. London: Harrap. Thick 8vos. First editions, first printings with 100 illustrations. Red cloth with lettering to spines, in dust jackets. Scarce first British editions of Steffens’ autobiography, the reporter and writer known for his involvement in the muckraker approach to uncovering corruption and scandal during the Progressive Era in the US. Cloth boards a little mottled towards the fore-edge though the boards are firm and the bindings remain tight and square. Internally usually clean, some offsetting to endpapers and very occasional areas of scattered foxing. The surviving jackets with some apparent frost damage, front flap to second volume detached from the rest of the jacket, down rubbing, corners and tips chipped and some all-round grubbiness, but actually quite pleasingly presentable in Mylar. Scarce.
